This day could have been simple like an usual day at work but, while listening to some music on a friend’s page, i remembered an old 2001 game that characterized, all by himself, the whole nerdy/geek spirit of the 80-90′s period.
This game is Uplink, created by Introversion Software, that i discovered at a time where i was interested in computer (in)security.
His principle is very simple, it’s a pseudo-realistic hacking game that sets in a future that is very similar to those that we can have in our favorite 80/90s movies like Hackers, Johnny Mnemonic or Ghost in the Shell.*
You’re a young and promising hacker,et they offer you the possibility to take a job at Uplink which is a company hat recruits freelance hackersand propose their services to others corporations.
In exchange we have :
- A personal Gateway to acces the net and do all our bad stuff.
- An access to a BBS to receive news from the computer and economic world.
- A shop to upgrade softwares, hardwares and the gateway
- A bank account to receive all our payments (you can open another one on banks)
Despise the face that you’re mostly free to do whatever you want ,there are things that happens during your little demeanors while stacking some money.
Without revealing the whole plot, it’s about a dangerous virus and a struggle between two mega-corporations in which you can take an active part (or not).
That said here is a non exhaustive list of all the things they can ask you to do in the game :
- Datas theft
- Datas/servers destruction.
- Modification of social or criminal informations about an individual (in a good or bad way).
- Trace a money transfer or even hack a bank accont to transfer some money (hard to do but can be very gratifying when you do it for yourself).
- Trace another hacker so he get caught (bad for the Neuromancer Rating, which is an unofficial evaluation whether you’re a bastard or a good guy).
